The little town of Mesolongion, located in western Greece, is a historic shrine for all lovers of liberty. It was here, during the Greek Revolution against the Turks in 1823, that Marco Bozzaris achieved immortality. Bozzaris, a heroic Greek general, is buried under a modest monument near a military hospital. Nearby lies a tomb containing the heart of Lord Byron, the famous English poet who died while supporting the Greek cause; Byron’s body was later returned to England.
In 1881, a monument was erected to honor Lord Byron at Mesolongion. More recently, a beautiful marble group was placed in one of the parks of Athens. This sculpture shows Byron protecting a beautiful woman, symbolizing Greece, from a ferocious barbarian, representing Turkey. Lord Byron and the Greek Revolution
Lord Byron’s connection with Greek independence was more sentimental than practical, but it was deeply meaningful.
