Vakif Hans Reviving Istanbul’s Commercial Heritage
Vakif Hans, or charitable lodges, are iconic landmarks in Istanbul’s urban landscape, reflecting the city’s rich cultural and architectural heritage. Constructed in the early 20th century under the recommendation of Estates Custodian Hayri Efendi from Skopje, these lodges were envisioned as spaces to stimulate commerce and provide accommodation for merchants.
The First Vakif Han, a majestic seven-story structure, marked the inception of this architectural endeavor. Situated at the intersection of Heyhulislam Hayri Efendi and Vakif Han Avenues in Eminonu, construction commenced in 1911 and concluded in 1918.
